It’s hot here and I wish that I could go to a movie and enjoy an super-sized Coke and vat of popcorn. There is nothing better to beat the heat than to going to the movies. Sadly for me there are no theaters in the area that play movies in the original language. Everything is dubbed in Italian. Crap.
But really all the movies that I want to see are on DVD anyway. Summer heat brings up nostalgia like nothing else. It hits 90 and suddenly I can’t get the Psychedelic Furs or Simple Minds out of my head. I find my self humming Danke Schoen and lusting after a VW Carmen Gia. Oh the 80’s. It’s all the rage in street fashion and it makes me smile to see kids who weren’t even born yet rocking the look. I wonder if they have even seen any of the movies that started the clothing trends that they have brought back to life.
Movies like Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueler’s Day Off and the Breakfast Club, just to name a few, and their sound tracks are ingrained in my DNA. Like most women my age my first crushes were on Matthew Broderic, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy and Jake Ryan ( played by Michael Schoeffling). They were so beautiful. Sigh. I wanted to be Molly Ringwald or Mia Sara ( Ferris’s girlfriend).
I almost feel sad for my Italian friends and husband that they didn’t get to experience these movies the way I did. Sometimes I find myself remembering a funny line in a movie that fits the situation and realize that they just won’t get it. Even if they have seen the movie I am referring to odds are they saw it in Italian and the something was lost in the translation.
I sold all my DVD’s before moving here and I think that is time to start rebuilding my classics collection but for now I guess the trailers on You Tube will have to do.
Girl..i understand your pain….Almost all my humor stems from quoting 80s movies and Marcelo doesn’t get it either!
Talk about laughing at your own jokes!
Hmmn, you sound like my friend Mike – who CONSTANTLY, like every other sentence, uses 80’s music quotes in conversation. It’s ridiculous (he looks up the song on his iphone & plays it-ie the system & don’t disturb this groove). lol. I told him if he HAD to keep doing that sh*t, that he should at least update his sound/expand his library & learn some Kanye or something!
